Exclusive TRoT Excerpt

ravelle — Tue, 07/13/2010 - 17:11

I'm very honoured (I'm British - I demand that 'u'!) to announce that Scott has kindly permitted us to post up an excerpt from his forthcoming novel.

In my haste to post it up for you guys to read, I haven't actually read it yet! I'll post my thoughts below as soon as I have done though.

Many thanks to Sabetha (as always) and Scott for facilitating this,

Ravelle

Omfg. THANK YOU to all who

Akaia Autumngold — Tue, 07/13/2010 - 18:42

Omfg.

THANK YOU to all who arranged this, and THANK YOU to Scott himself. <3 <3 Just when I thought this week couldn't get any better...it did.

What a great extract. Omfg. SO glad to spend time with Locke and Jean again - and I like the addition of the Sabetha dream in the beginning. D: omfg.

Hopefully I'll have more coherent thoughts on the matter when I've calmed down.

Sabetha — Tue, 07/13/2010 - 22:08

(Akaia, nothing was really arranged, that's the crazy thing! I emailed Scott a while ago asking if he could send a copy of the Bantam Spectra Pulse excerpt and instead he sent me this doozy! Such a nice guy).

My thoughts: Well, needless to say I loved it, can't wait for the book, loved Locke, loved jean, Scott is god etc. etc. I might as well get the gushing out the way right?

But seriously, I nearly said out loud after reading it: 'WOO KICK SOME ASS JEAN!'. And don't pretend you weren't thinking it either! I love dangerous Jean almost as much as I love sweet, book-reading, spectacle-wearing Jean.

I realised - or at least, I'm making the assumption - that judging by Locke's opening lines the prologue itself is meant to be his dream...? I think that's an interesting concept, thar. And the wistful/regretful tone in Locke's words paths the way for his and Sabetha's reunion, don't you think?

As usual, loved the witty banter between Locke and Jean - or maybe not so much on the latter's behalf. ... (Does that count as gushing? Heh). I especially liked the line that went something like, 'you obstinate... something... something... biting and witty and thoroughly convincing!'

However, I'm sad they got rid of Regal, the cat ;_; Kinda a moot point, but hey, I liked the furry critter!

And damn you, cliff hanger! Can't wait to find out what happens next! *Resumes gushing*

OMG! This is so nice of

TheSpider — Wed, 07/14/2010 - 05:26

OMG! This is so nice of Scott... Did you read the disclaimer? So funny!

I am so happy to read this; I've had such a trying few weeks...

I do agree with Akaia; I liked the new part about the dream. I don't know if the prologue really is his dream, but most likely something in those lines since apparently Locke was revisiting memories in his dream.

I also liked a few symbolic touches like the fact that Lashain is described as being the sister city of Karthain, separated by a lake. How fitting... Just like Locke and Sabetha who will play on opposite sides but grew up like brother and sister (of some sort).

I was also very sad to read that Regal got sold. :-( It's a detail of course but I liked the little monster!

Jean kicks ass! Really! How ever I'm not sure what kind of good it's going to do Locke if Jean threatens the physiker like that! Oo It sounds like a rather dangerous thing to do.

Scott seems to be doing a bit better. I'm so happy to reached out to you and to his fans.

Scott Lynch is a LEGEND! This

Elfy — Wed, 07/14/2010 - 10:34

Scott Lynch is a LEGEND!
This was a really nice gesture to the fans on his behalf.
I liked the explanation of the prologue being a dream, that's how I saw it, and I think it makes more sense to have that bit in to link the prologue to the main story.
I always like seeing Jean go all badass and he did that in this. I really enjoyed seeing him rough up the arrogant servant. Let's face it the guy deserved it, I wouldn't have been at all surprised if he was pocketing the money that Jean included with the notes and then not delivering the messages to his master anyway.
I'm not a cat person, so Regal's loss didn't greatly upset me, although the interaction with he and Locke was always amusing. They did have to sell him, though, what good would a boat be without a cat after all?

I was so excited that I

CoupeDeGrace — Fri, 08/06/2010 - 04:38

I was so excited that I actually dug out my favorite reading blanket and cooked up some ramen noodles before sitting down to enjoy this.

What fun it was :)

I only wish that "scrying my piss" could divine a release date for the novel.

"I suspect this is all gonna end in screaming and drowning"
