Was anyone actually there!?

Sabetha — Mon, 10/06/2008 - 21:57

2nd November, World Fantasy 2007. Lynch did a reading - an excerpt from The Republic of Thieves. Was anyone there? Can anyone relay details? Does anyone have footage? ANYTHING!? Lol. But seriously, this is all I found (the ramblings of blogger but gold dust nonetheless)

Quote:
LYNCH:
Got to this one early too, and being the King of the Nerds that I am, almost walked right into Scott as I tried to find the perfect seat. I introduced myself and babbled on like an idiot for about thirty seconds while he had the grace to pretend to be interested (while simultaneously inching towards the front of the room to do his reading).

He actually seems like a really nice guy. He shook my hand, didn't point and laugh while I babbled, and said something about being nervous and hoping he didn't screw up. He didn't.

Scott read an excerpt from the third book in the Gentleman Bastard Sequence,Republic of Thieves. He explained to the audience that the sequence is 7 novels long, and that the odd numbered novels will be flashback-style stories, while the even numbered ones would occur in "real time".

The excerpt was - like all of Lynch's work - clever and sharp, and funny without trying hard to be so. The Republic of Thieves takes place when Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen are in their mid-teens, still in the company led by Father Chains.

The piece was interesting and of course, left me wanting to read the damn thing right there and then. Oh well. Red Seas Under Red Skiesjust came out this Summer so I assume its going to be awhile before the next one comes out.

I WISH I'D BEEN THERE!!!! I want to hear the excerpt... If anyone has any info... please share! :D And I don't suppose anyone's heard from Lynch in person, no?

I was not there, and I have to say I'm getting a little frustrated at the lack of new information.

Even acknowledgment that the book is coming out by Lynch on his web site or livejournal would be something!

I would have thought, after reading it out, he would have at least posted the same excerpt on his blog. Though I do wonder, considering he hasn't even finished the manuscript now, let alone last year, where he got that excerpt from. It must've been the very, very beginning of the book, or a section he intended to put in later on. I thought the blogger had got RSURS mixed up with TROT but it doesn't seem like it... *sigh* If only we knew...

This is amazing...
Likewise, Scott was at ArmadilloCon last August and read an except from RoT but I haven't found much about it anywhere. Let me know if you know more than I do.
And again that elusive Spectra Pulse Magazine 2 with an except than nobody seems to have. I'm beginning to wonder if it is a ghost magazine...
Frustrating!

I literally emailed EVERYONE

Sabetha — Mon, 05/17/2010 - 23:17

I literally emailed EVERYONE for that magazine. People even kindly sent me contacts of THEIR contacts, but I couldn't find it anywhere! I got very close at one point: some guy from California, but he moved house and lost it along the way.

Personally, I think it's all one big conspiracy ;-P

LOL You got a lot closer than I did. I did ask a few people and went to bookstores (since supposedly some received a few copies)but when I asked about it people looked at me like I was insane...

I do think there is a conspiracy... Robert Pattinson can't go buy a cup of coffee without the Twilight fans knowing, but we can't get a copy of that magazine... This is ridiculous!

You renewed my determination!

Sabetha — Mon, 05/17/2010 - 23:51

You renewed my determination! I've emailed another few people who might have copies. Although, one of them refuses to give out copies of the magazines or its contents - wont even scan them - but I've asked if he knows where I can get one. Argh, why would you be like that!? He's not even under any legal obligation... he's just hording :( I remember emailing Scott agggeesss ago asking if he had a copy (or if it was going to be posted), but he was going through a silent period. Then the online RoT excerpt came out and I forgot about the OTHER excerpt. But I still want that one too, hee hee.

Gosh, I wanted to send you a private message, but I just realized that there is no such option! We maybe should coordinate - I have a few ideas...

Oh yeah, there isn't! I'll mention that to Rob next time I speak to him. You can email me at Sabetha@camorr.com though :-).... (The people I contacted last night weren't any help).
