Republic Of Thieves Publish Date

ravelle — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 16:15

It's been announced that, despite our finger-crossing and fervent hoping, Scott's upcoming novel The Republic Of Thieves has been pushed back to 03/06/2010.

Gollancz has recently released a catalogue claiming it will be out in November, but I'd rubbish that claim. It said RoT would be out last summer, but obviously that didn't happen. Catalogues aren't always right, and considering the manuscript still hasn't been turned in, I'd go with what many websites are saying, which is the 2010 date.

It's disappointing, but hardly surprising. I just hope Mr Lynch gets back on the web soon, to really update us.

eh, at this pt. i've kinda moved on to other authors. anybody figure out why it's taking him three times as long to write #3 as it took to write #2?

Because book 2 didn't do so well he has to really crack down on this one. Everyone knows about RSURS haphazard ending and the slightly disjointed plotline. Plus, he's got a lot of pressure with the introduction of Sabetha (something he brought upon himself really) - and in Scott's own words, the events of RoT are going to be extremely complex. I don't blame him for taking longer than usual. And he's apparently had to deal with some personal issues.

That's a shame that Lynch feels he has to work harder on Republic because of the disappointing sales of RSURS. Personally I thought it was just as good as TLOLL myself, without simply repeating himself, as so many fantasy authors do.

And both of the books are so much better than ninety percent of the fantasy being published now.

The wait is terrible, but still not as long as Martin has subjected us to, so I'll grin and bear it.

God, I completely agree with you. I find 90 percent of all fantasy novels have the same plotline - the war that tears countries apart, the runaway princess, the thief with a heart-of-gold, the somehow mystical sword that only one person can wield etc. etc. BOTH LoLL and RSURS were refreshing imo. I think the problem was that RSURS wasn't as good as LOLL when it came to characters and plot. Sure, it cemented Locke and Jean down to the ground and I adore them twice as much as I did in the first book, but it could've been a lot better.

That said, I heard that Scott had to take out 50 pages of RSURS. Maybe that's where the good ending went? Hehe.

I did not think that RSURS was too long, so I'm curious what putting those 50 pages back would have given us.

All the delays are not really bothering me. I've got so much that I've bought, but not read yet, that if Scott, or other authors are late, then it is not like I'm starving for reading material.

I have been reading John Scalzi' Old Man's War and The Ghost Brigades recently, and I thought they were great.

I've also got Game of Thrones, The Stand, and Last Argument of Kings on my TBR pile.

I stand corrected. A Game of Thrones is one of the finest epic fantasy novels ever written, and The Stand is simply one of the finest novels ever written, any genre. 8-)

I'm struggling to find good reading material, but maybe that's because I can't afford to keep buying books. God, I remember reading The Stand years ago. Stephen King, right? I love nearly every book written by him, especially 'Misery'. Can't remmeber much about The Stand but I know it's good 8-)

Roland of Gilead — Tue, 05/26/2009 - 17:27

The Stand is King's big post-apocalyptic novel, published twice, the second time his unexpurgated version that he wasn't powerful enough originally to get published in the form he wrote it. It has also been made into a mini-series and currently Marvel is doing a comics version.

Most fans consider it King's finest work, and I would agree, unless we're talking Dark Tower as a whole.

The novel is over 1100 pages long, but reads like it's 500. You truly come to know and love or hate the characters, as a tiny remnant of immune survivors of a devastating plague square off in a battle between good and evil.

Highly recommended. 8-)

The whole "Roland of Gilead" king of gives it away that you are a Dark Tower fan. I loved that series as well!

I just finished The Stand this weekend. I found it entertaining, but not what I was hoping for, and a little disappointed by the end.

At 1153 pages in hardcover, I was also sick of carrying it around everywhere. :)

Icarus — Wed, 07/08/2009 - 00:48

I picked up the hardcover for $1 at a used book sale. It was almost like carrying around a dictionary for two weeks.

The problem I had was not with there being too many, or too few characters. I had no problem with that.

My problem is that he seemed to have some great ideas for each of the characters, and then went nowhere with all of them.

I loved all the character introductions, and their interactions and responses to the superflu. Once the Free Zone formed, the whole tone of the book seemed to change.

Roland of Gilead — Wed, 07/08/2009 - 16:28

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy The Stand as much as I thought you would. I agree that the book's tone changes, but I think King does an admirable job of showing how these changes effect and deepen the characters.

One major character dies early on, and I was personally bummed about that, as he was my favorite, but the novel as a whole continued to enthrall me, both in the original version and in the longer, uncut version. 8-)

Do you mean March 6th or June 3rd? I assume the former, but I would just like to point out that using US dating standards on an international site isn't a great idea. YYYY-MM-DD works and is pretty much unambiguous for any reader from anywhere in the world.

Sorry to return and bitch as the first thing I do, but that really is a pet peeve of mine. I'll be more constructive soon, I hope. ;)

Re: Republic Of Thieves Publish Date

Sabetha — Sat, 08/01/2009 - 15:22

Uh, I used the UK dating standards, the way I was taught. Day, month, year. I've never known it any other way. US do it month, day, year, I think, or maybe the way you put it. I'll be writing dates UK style anyways, as this is a UK based site run by two UK residents. I'll be more specific next time (ie 3rd March 2010) to avoid confusion.

That said, I thnk we're looking at a July/August release next year, if we're lucky. As soon as it's announced it'll be posted.

So Amazon has 17th Feb 2011 listed as the release date for the Paperback version of TRoT,
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0575084472/ref=s9_simh_gw_p14_d0_i1?p...

as does the Gollancz page:
http://www.orionbooks.co.uk/books/the-republic-of-thieves-hardback

However Amazon has the Hardcover version listed as 16th Jun 2011

Does anyone know if there is a concrete release date?

Cheers.

TheSpider — Wed, 01/05/2011 - 04:11

The is no official date as far as I know. But Scott turned in the manuscript to his editor a few months ago. The last time we've heard from him about it, he said that he was working on corrections, etc...

The February date is obviously not realistic. Let's hope for the best: June 2011. But keep in mind that the release keeps being delayed. So just be patient! :-)

Wilzo — Thu, 01/06/2011 - 18:58

I think there were some (rather worrying) dates for some editions in Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Republic-Thieves-Gollancz-Scott-Lynch/dp/057507701...
There's one hardcover edition date saying May 28th, 2013 and a paperback date November 1st, 2012. Let's hope that the 2013 date at least isn't the one we're going to get...

Locke would appreciate it.

Oh my goodness that isn't

Sabetha — Fri, 01/07/2011 - 16:38

Oh my goodness that isn't even FUNNY. I just don't believe it. I just don't. I think that if the date got pushed back that much and considering Scott has handed in the manuscipt and is revising, I can only imagine it would mean they told him to redo the whole thing. I think I'd die if I had to wait any longer than this year. I read one date that was March 9th, which is a day after my birthday so I hope it's that one! But seriously. I'm hoping with all my might that's just amazon being rubbish as usual.

Wilzo — Fri, 01/07/2011 - 18:22

In here http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=19889635857 a person says "Last I heard, from Scott himself at a con on November 20th, the release date isn't set yet, and should be springish. That said, that isn't concrete by any means." (posted Dec 16th 2010)

That sounds rather comforting, actually, having come from Scott himself, though of course things can change. If this still stands, I think the March date likely. And if you look at the other dates on amazon, it offers Feb and June as well (or at least I remember it doing so...)

I really hope we don't have to wait until next year. And if can't be made any earlier, I'd like the June date - it's two days after my birthday! :D Are they spying on us fans and checking our birthdays so they can place the would-be-release-dates close to them? 'Cause I think they do.

Locke would appreciate it.

Wilzo — Fri, 01/21/2011 - 12:45

I just checked the Orion Books website http://www.orionbooks.co.uk/content/search?SearchText=republic+of+thieve... and it says tRoT's publishing date is "February 2011". That'd apparently be the hardback edition, there's nothing about the paperback release. A Finnish internet bookstore gives Feb for the hardcover, and Jun for the paperback. I think that'd be nice. Fingers crossed.

Locke would appreciate it.

Sabetha — Fri, 01/21/2011 - 22:40

Hmm, now while I'm not about to throw a fit over having the book in LESS THAN A MONTH'S TIME GEE ZUS YES I'm also concerned by the lack of any kind of promotion. So while it PAINS me to say this, for the sake of Scott's career I kind of hope it's a few months later, so the sales will benefit, not just us hardcore fans. I still find it extremely suspcious that we've yet to have an announcement officially confirming the release date. You would have thought with less than a month to go (supposedly) at least the author himself would've said so.

This is my sad rant of the day....
It is no directed at anyone in particular. I just wish we would hear SOMETHING! Now we're completely in limbo. Complete silence from everyone, from Scott, from editors, etc... It is very frustrating, especially since from what I understand a first draft of the manuscript was submitted months ago... What is happening? Are there major problems that necessitate major rewrites? Are the editors waiting for the write moment to publish (from a marketing point of view)? Is Scott too unwell to work at all (I really hope he's doing better)?
I just want to hear SOMETHING!

Sabetha — Tue, 02/15/2011 - 21:27

Well, I can't supply solid answers, but I'm guessing it's all of the above. About the manuscipt: 'As of this time, Scott Lynch does not appear to have handed in the final draft of the manuscript for the book, obviously making publication just next month impossible.' - from Wertzone, as you know. Scott is obviously still unwell if his silence is anything to go by. And I imagine they ARE waiting for the right time to publish it, as it can't clash with any other major releases and extensive promotion will have to be done, which will probably be around big convention dates.

It's all just speculation at this point, though. As it has been for many months.
