The Republic of Thieves content (?)
Sabetha — Tue, 09/23/2008 - 20:27
I read this old but interesting and revealing interview with Lynch on the Random House website the other day, where he strongly suggests the nature of two schemes pulled by the Gentlemen Bastards prior to Lies (Jasmer and Espara maybe?). Okay, so it doesn't necessarily mean that there'll be in TROT, but Jean hints that Sabetha was involved in Jasmer and Espara and as she's going to be revealed in the next book... *shrugs*
Possible spoilers ahoy!
In one scheme, they are 'posing as mediums capable of contacting dead loved ones'. In another, they are 'sellers of titles to imaginary lands'.
The first one sounds like it'll be a laugh to read (although I'm getting cheesey images of glass balls, gypsies and someone hiding under a table throwing his/her voice, I'm sure it wont be so stereotypical!). The second one sounds quite bland imo but I'm sure Lynch will manage to turn it into something ridiculously frivolous nonetheless ;)

Sabetha — Wed, 09/24/2008 - 10:37sure :)
it's here: http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780553588941&view=auqa
They call it an 'interview' but it's more Lynch's personal description of Lies. I think it's a nice insight into the book though :D
Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
Sabetha — Thu, 12/25/2008 - 19:45Something really tiny that i found on some site about the book. Not even worth mentioning, but hey, there's nothing else to talk about concerning the series, right? (That doesn't involve moaning, anway).
I suppose I found it relatively interesting 'cause I imagined they'd still be on the boat. I wonder where they'll be? I can't imagine they'd have a desire to go to Karthain, hehe.
Oh, the book's realease date has been pushed back to March. But even that's looking tentative now.

Roland of Gilead — Fri, 01/02/2009 - 18:37Why do I have this horrible feeling that Lynch is contracted that most dreaded of maladies, Martinitus?

Sabetha — Sat, 01/03/2009 - 17:15Hmm. It HAS been over a year now. I honestly don't understand it. It takes 5 minutes to write 'I'm still alive and writing guys' and post it on a blog. Nobody's THAT busy, am I right? Oh well.
Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
username — Wed, 01/07/2009 - 20:26does anyone else think we'll be seeing the chic from rsurs (miriam i think) alot? at first i thought she could be sabetha disguised well enough that locke and jean wouldn't notice her but i'm not sure how recently they'd seen her. i think it'd be easy for somebody like her to disguise herself from ppl she hadn't seen in 10 yrs. random, i know.
Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
Sabetha — Fri, 01/09/2009 - 13:46Merrain? The woman that worked for the Archon?
It' an interesting theory. I think Locke would recognise her though. Even if she'd managed to completely disguise herself physically, there's the voice to consider too. I don't know; I can't explain it. But I guess anything's possible.
Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
username — Sat, 01/10/2009 - 22:34yeah she's the one. I never thought of the voice, that's a good point. do you know how long it's been since locke has interacted w/ her?

Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
Sabetha — Sat, 03/21/2009 - 13:06So, I didn't think this warranted a new thread, 'cause it's not the ACTUAL thing, but I'm still quite pleased with it :-)
Even though this was posted over a year ago, I only found it yesterday. Some nice person took the time to write down everything they remembered from SL's reading of an excerpt from the RoT, from the World Fantasy Convention. Okay, so it's not THE excerpt (I'm still trying to get hold of it but people at Spectra Pulse are assholes), but it paints a reasonable picture of what it's about. I edited it here and there, just to make it a bit more coherent (there were confusing personal notes from the poster here there and everywhere), but I'll leave the link at the bottom for creit reasons and in case you want to see the original post.
----
Here is what I recall. Note: I get all of the new names wrong. I have no notes.
I'm putting in placeholder names for now and will edit if anyone who actually
remembers comes along.
---------------------------------
Scott gave a bit of background for those who weren't familiar with the series, then gave some of the setup for the chapter before he started reading. The chapter is set when Locke is aged between 14-16 and Father Chains is growing weary of the adolescent bullsh** from his wards. Calo and Galdo are in a ‘twin phase’ where they want to distance themselves from each other and create individual identities - one grows his hair long, the other shaves his head clean – diminishing their usefulness to the gang as they can no longer be used to portray the same person. Jean is also having some issue to which Scott only alluded.
The reading begins with Locke heading into an abandoned hulk of a tavern in a small town a short journey from Camorr. He is there to meet an old friend of Father Chains, owner of a theatrical troupe (the name is possibly Marcator, though this is uncertain). Most of his actors have left him and he has fallen on hard times, so much so that he is willing to take on Chains' gang of amateurs as performers, allowing them to learn actual stagecraft in the process as part of their training to pull scams.
In the tavern, Marcator asks Locke if he has completed the tasks he asked of him: that the front and rear doors are closed and barred and the windows are all boarded up. Locke is peevish, but confirms.
They are there to rehearse the famous play "The Republic of Thieves" - whose playwright is dead some 400 years. This play has not been performed in 20 years - when Marcator and his now bitter rival across the river, Laphroiag (again, the name is not certain) played lead roles and were still friends.
They begin the rehearsal. The language of the play evokes Shakespeare to the modern ear (which makes sense in that it was written 400 years in the past for Locke). Locke delivers a line from the chorus. His intonation is dreadful (Scott delivered the lines intentionally badly - later confirming that his performance omitted descriptive text which indicates the tone Locke gives in his various recitations of the lines) and needless to say Marcator is not impressed. They try again and again, and Locke improves each time, though is obviously not happy with being criticised and makes some cutting remark about the triviality of his line. Marcator reacts badly to the suggestion that the line is 'only the chorus' - stating that the chorus is the most important part in that it is the only part in the play that actually knows there is a play going on. Even the powerful prince role is unaware that he is actually a fictional character.
Eventually Locke improves to the point of adequate. Marcator points out that it is essential Locke convince the other members of Marcator's troupe that he is an actual actor - if he fails, they will leave him, ruining Marcator’s business. Locke is frustrated when Marcator points out that Sabetha is a natural actor and was able to rehearse with the rest of the performers from day one, whereas he must work in a sealed tavern where there is no chance of his bad acting being revealed.
---
What I find most intriguing is that the title of book is based around the play. I honestly didn't see that coming! It's makes it all the more interesting. I love the fact that Locke's arrogance is already shining through, as well as his rivalry with Sabetha. And the info about the twins is interesting too! Poor Chains.

Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
Icarus — Sun, 03/22/2009 - 02:31I like the idea of the flashbacks of Chains, Calo, Galdo, and Sabetha, but I'm not sure I'm sold on the whole "Republic of Thieves" is a play thing.
If this is the flashbacks portion, what is the present day portion?

Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
TheSpider — Sun, 03/22/2009 - 03:33This is very interesting! The relationship between Sabetha and Locke seems to be very complex - to say the least: basically he cannot live with or without her... I have the feeling that it is not going to end well. Oh well, Scott warned us that he does "a lot of plot shopping at the Unhappy Ending Discount Warehouse."
This 3rd installment promises to be most enjoyable. There is nothing like a good dose of adolescents' hormones to spice up the plots. I almost feel bad for Chains, poor old man... :-)

Apparently the excerpt (or maybe another) was published in the most recent issue of Spectra Pulse Magazine. I've been trying to get a copy but I've been unsuccessful so far. The magazine is usually distributed at conventions or is available at some bookstores. If anyone has a copy, please share. ;)
Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
Sabetha — Sun, 03/22/2009 - 12:09Yeah, this is the flashback. The present day bit is about Locke fighting the posion, bondsmage etc. You can read about the basic plot in the RoT blurb.
Same here. I've emailed a lot of people but I've still yet to get a copy. Downside to living in England, I suppose.
I'm really excited about the love/hate relationship involving Sabetha and Locke, I bet it's a real kick in the balls for Locke to be constantly outdone (that's impression I get anyway) and I wanna know how love blossoms out of such a rivalry!
I really hope Scott doesn't kill Sabetha off just yet. She's had such a build up so it would be a real shame. I was surprised when he killed off Calo, Galdo and Bug in the first installment, I really hope he doesn't have a habit of killing main characters! Hopefully he's just referring to their relationship, which obviously doesn't end well anyway, and for some reason I can't see Sabetha suddenly having a change of heart and reuniting with Jean and Locke throughout the other 4 books. It's kinda suggested that she might make a reappearance in other books (book4: 'Two thieves caught between avarice and admiration', book 6: 'War and other matters of the heart. Someone makes a mistake for neither the first nor the last time.' and book 5: 'A dangerous bid to reach old allies. '), but it's very vague so don't really know. Could be referring to anyone.
Mostly, I hope Jean doesn't die. Ever. I will cry for HOURS if he does.
Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
Sabetha — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 13:21Going with the whole 'destroying Locke forever' business, found a small insight into why Sabetha might want to do such a thing:
So maybe it's not so much to do with love, but her wanting to be the best? Honestly, we don't even know if she loved Locke as much as he loves her. All these snippets of her character are killing me.
Here's what the Orion catalogue had to say about the book:
There's more about what the catalogue said in the 'Announcements' thread. If ya wanna see the catalogue, it's here: http://209.85.229.132/search?q=cache:5euPzU5z5LAJ:www.mcarthur-co.com/cataloguesSpring09/Orion-spring09.pdf+gollancz+catalogue+2009+lynch&cd=5&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk
Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
Roland of Gilead — Wed, 04/22/2009 - 16:27I hate to be the voice of negativity all the time, but to me, it's a bad sign that most of the novels being promoted there have shots of the books, whereas Republic of Thieves only has an old photo of Lynch. This makes me think the book is not ready for publication anytime soon. :x
Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
TheSpider — Wed, 08/05/2009 - 02:47A few things from Scott's Twitter:
I guess RoT's manuscript hasn't been turned in yet.

Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
Sabetha — Wed, 08/05/2009 - 12:47Ah! I just found that on his twitter this morning! I hope nothing happens to Regal, the poor kitten. It's good that Scott is actively working on the book. Horray! I hope there's more spoilers to come!
I wonder who DOESNT lose their virginity? I'm glad Scott doesn't pussyfoot around issues like that. I wonder if Scott counts Sabetha as a GB? SO MANY QUESTIONS.
I heard it hadn't been turned in, too. Although can't a manuscript be revised even after it's been turned in?
(How can one be 'mildly slaughtered'? Haha.)
Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
toran — Wed, 08/05/2009 - 23:43I think it could be quite funny to have Calo or Galdo miss out. i think it would leave to some very funny heckling from the others hahah

OH NOES. Sounds like an epic chapter too. Hehe. Poor Scott always seems to have to cut chapters down! Wasn't 50pages cut from RSURS? Man, it's a shame. I LIKE long books!

Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
Roland of Gilead — Fri, 08/07/2009 - 15:06I agree, better this than limbo.
Still, I was hoping the book was on its way to the publisher. Ah, well. :?
Please, oh, please, don't let Lynch's case of Martinitus be a permanent one.
Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
TheSpider — Fri, 08/07/2009 - 16:27That was my guess too.
As long as the cuts are made sparingly and wisely... I also would like everything to be kept, but for RSuRS things could have been cut in the middle while the end felt rushed. So I wonder where the 50 pages were cut.
Re: The Republic of Thieves content (?)
Sabetha — Sun, 08/09/2009 - 13:49The 50 pages that explained the involvement of the group at the end, it seems. What were they called? The priori or something.

Haha, what's all that about? LOCKE gets BEATEN with a 50-pound sack of potatoes. In broad daylight on a BOAT.
But we all know Lynch would NEVER make it so simple and innocent ;) I'd hate to think what it ACTUALLY was.
