New Republic Of Thieves Excerpt
Sabetha — Wed, 05/26/2010 - 22:33
Well, maybe 'new' isn't the right word, as it was published a couple of years ago.
But anyway, The Spider and I have been emailing basically EVERYONE who holds any kind of connection with Spectra Pulse Magazine, and after receiving a mail box full of replies stating the usual 'don't have a copy anymore', we've both finally found two people that actually DO. The Spider will be posting the excerpt in a couple of days, courtesy of David Williams.
CAN'T WAIT!!
(And thank you to all the kind authors who replied to mine and Spider's emails!)
Can't wait either! I hope it
TheSpider — Thu, 05/27/2010 - 20:45Can't wait either! I hope it isn't an excerpt from the Prologue but something new.
I'll post it as soon as I get it.
A big thanks to David Williams (and all the other persons who answered our query)!
I received the magazine today
TheSpider — Wed, 06/09/2010 - 06:08I received the magazine today - courtesy of David J. Williams, author of the Autumn Rain Trilogy ( http://www.autumnrain2110.com/ ). Many thanks go to him for graciously sending me a copy of the Spectra Pulse magazine, especially with his busy schedule since the last installment of his trilogy was just released a couple of weeks ago!
I've scanned the 4-page excerpt and a link should follow promptly (thanks, Sabetha).
SPOILERS - DO NOT READ WHAT FOLLOWS IF YOU WANT TO READ THE EXCERPT FIRST.

I imagine this is from the very beginning of the book. We know the prologue deals with young Locke and his meeting with Sabetha. I think this basically follows the prologue. I don't really think we need to know what happened on the boat (it may be told later during flashbacks - if it is at all interesting)). Locke and Jean must have sailed peacefully- despite the terrible fate that awaits Locke- to Lashain, where they may have acquired some kind of lesser nobility title (just as Jean had talked about doing in RSuRS). Their trip must have been marred by Locke's worsening condition (due to Stragos' poison). Riddled with guilt and desperate to save his best (and last) friend, Jean desperately tries to save Locke.
It is really heartbreaking to see Jean -very "mother hen"like-struggling with this while Locke seems to be in peace with his fate.
Of course, I imagine that in the most dramatic moment-everything is lost and Locke is on his death bed-the Bondsmagi will appear to offer them a daunting alternative...
I really can't wait for this book to be released!
Thanks for doing this Spider.
Elfy — Fri, 06/11/2010 - 09:20Thanks for doing this Spider. I just love reading Scott's writing. He is so talented.

Sabetha — Fri, 06/11/2010 - 13:27Sorry for the delay! I'm afraid you're all going to have to download the excerpt until I can convert the file. But It's still better than nothing for the time being!

I actually emailed Scott about the excerpt too, and surprisingly he got back to me saying he was more than happy to post it via email, but when I emailed him back saying that was fine, he never actually sent it!
(Big thanks to David Pomerico for sending me a magazine in the post too!)
SPOILERS
----------------------------------
I actually remember Scott saying in an interview that he intentionally left out the part where Locke and Jean are sailing around straight after RSURS. He didn't give his reasons, just said he'd leave it up to the fanfictioners to decide what went on between Locke and Jean (I think this was in answer to a question about what he thinks of all the jean/locke slash that's around). I'm not too bothered though.
Goodness, Locke's symptoms sound awful! Especially the bleeding under the nails bit. Ew. It really must be tearing Jean about watching his state decline so rapidly, and as reader, it's actually quite painful to see the normally energetic thief so tired and shaky. It was also a really interesting look into Lashain and the purchased titles - I like the sound of the city as a setting, though i don't know how long they'll be situated there as I guess they'll be moving to Karthain.
I can't wait for the bondsmagi to turn up! I wonder if they'll heal Locke before or after he's completed his 'task'?
Thanks for doing this Spider.

Thanks but this was a team effort with Sabetha.

He didn't give his reasons, just said he'd leave it up to the fanfictioners to decide what went on between Locke and Jean (I think this was in answer to a question about what he thinks of all the jean/locke slash that's around).
I had forgotten about this! At any rate, I don't think what happened on the boat needs to be explained (unless it involves the plot): they sailed, Jean grieved the death of Ezra, and Locke got sick... (Personally I really can't see Locke and Jean together.)
I wonder if they'll heal Locke before or after he's completed his 'task'?
They'll have to do something because he's dying. Not only this, but the symptoms are repulsing; I can't imagine that Locke would be of much help, dripping blood all over Karthain--not that kind of blood at least because I'm sure the Bondsmagi have some kind of blood in mind! I'm sure they won't completely cure him before he finishes his task though, but they'll give him another respite. They're so pervert... Locke is going to HATE doing this.
Regarding the whole missing
Sabetha — Fri, 06/11/2010 - 17:19Regarding the whole missing out the sailing part, I'm actully kind of glad he did because I'm not too keen on books that pick up literally the moment the previous left off. I think Scott got the balance right with Lies and RSURS, and he got it right again with RSURS and RoT. (I don't like books that jump years into the future either :-) )
oh yeah, you're right about the illness! Would be kinda inconvenient I guess, heh heh. But they need some kind of blackmail so I reckon they'll partially cure him as they go along (like the antidote in RSURS - a dose every month or whatever) then cure him fully if he succeeds. However, I do think that he would've outright refused to be cured by them if they hadn't mentioned Sabetha (as suggested in the blurb) - as you said, he's going to hate doing this!
That makes me wonder... the opposing bondsmagi to the ones Locke will work for must've employed (or blackmailed or whatever) Sabetha to work with them BEFORE the bondsmagi approached Locke, considering she was used as a bargaining chip to make Locke agree. Was she working for them already, I wonder? If not, that's some serious undercover work they've been doing to know their opposition is going to approach Locke, AND that he will say yes to helping them. I like to think she's working with the bondsmagi already.
Thanks yet again to Spider
Elfy — Sat, 06/12/2010 - 02:04Thanks yet again to Spider and Sabetha and David Williams for giving you guys the excerpt. This was great and yet again makes me wish I had the whole thing in my hands.
I think Scott's pattern withe the books is to start them with a bit of time elapsed between the end of the previous adventure. Gives them more of a self contained feel. I agree that showing us in detail the time spent sailing to Lashain wouldn't have added a lot to the story and I'm glad that Scott didn't do it.
I also like the way that in each book so far Scott seems to be showing us more of the world he's created for Locke. One criticism that some people level at Lies is that the world building isn't that polished, because we only get to see one city. With each successive book Scott, to me, seems to be refuting that criticism. Personally I loved Camorr and thought it was quite detailed. In Lies Camorr was like this extra character.
Elfy (http://travelsthroughiest.blogspot.com)
I agree with you, Elfy.
Sabetha — Sun, 06/13/2010 - 03:50I agree with you, Elfy. Unlike most authors, Scott is actually building up the world book by book, rather than throwing it all together in the first volume. I actually prefer this method to an overload of places and political structures. The only crit I have of it is, as you said, I loved Camorr, so I was sad when they left it behind, but I guess it gets revisited in the flashbacks.
I agree with you, Elfy and
TheSpider — Wed, 06/16/2010 - 06:46I agree with you, Elfy and Sabetha. I'm not a big fan of the "world-building" information overload. I really like the fact that you can feel in the GB sequence that Scott knows his stuff. You can feel that he has build a entire world with maps, a history, etc.. But he usually does not feel the need to digress for 50 pages (except in RSuRS at one point, which was actually the weakest part of the book at the end). Still his world has great depth.
Now, maybe you can help me. I seem to remember for some reason that Locke would be back in Camorr at some point in the sequence. Did I make this up? Did Scott say so in an interview? I really can't remember why I thought so.
Book 3: Karthain
Book 4: Kingdom of Seven Marrows
Book 5: ?
Book 6: ?
Book 7: ?
Spider, I can't remember
Elfy — Wed, 06/16/2010 - 08:53Spider, I can't remember hearing Scott say it, but I just kind of accepted it as a given that at some point during the sequence Locke would find himself back where it all started in Camorr. I certainly hope he goes back, because I love the city. Scott creates the others well, but there's something about Camorr that just seems more real.

Oh, I only just saw
Akaia Autumngold — Wed, 06/16/2010 - 10:35Oh, I only just saw this...thanks so much to all involved for working so hard and sharing this with us!! What a treat. I enjoyed this excerpt much more than the prologue (though that was wonderful to read, too) just because it focused more on that intolerable cliffhanger at the end of book II (the poison, obviously). And I don't really like the way Sabetha was introduced, but that's another story...
I love the description of Lashain, it's so typical of Scott's vivid style...I've already got very intreagued by and a little bit attached to the place, although we probably won't be stopping long before moving on (a bit like Vel Virazzo??). Of course this has effectively blown my pet theory to smithereens - that the poison was a bluff all along, and the bondsmagi would reveal it after Locke had accomplished their task. Never mind, the prospect of blood-everywhere, Locke-in-a-position-of-vulnerability is exciting enough to (just about) make up for the indignity of being wrong.
Now I'm even MORE excited about 2011, if that was even possible. I just hope the latest unconfirmed release date doesn't turn out to be yet another disappointment...
Spider, I don't remember any
Sabetha — Wed, 06/16/2010 - 11:00Spider, I don't remember any interview or such hinting at Locke returning to Camorr, but I would say it's safe to assume that he will, especially because the final book's 'teaser' thing says 'In the end, none of us can outrun our past'. As Elfy said, it kinda seems like a logical conclusion.
Kind of off topic, but I was speculating, do you think in book 5 when it says 'A shadow war against even older enemies', it might mean the Eldren? How cool would that be!? At first I just assumed it meant the bondsmagi, and maybe it does... as I said, only speculating :-)
My two cents, Sabetha - I
Akaia Autumngold — Wed, 06/16/2010 - 11:20My two cents, Sabetha - I don't think Scott has any immediate plans to involve the Eldren. I remember him saying in an interview a few years ago that he didn't even know what their deal was, and why did it have to matter anyway - something along those lines.
A lot of people seem to be incredibly intrigued by the Eldren, but I'm not so fussed. I've seen that concept done before, most noteably in Robbin Hobb's Farseer trilogy - and in my opinion the books were weaker because of it. I assume we'll see Dona Sofia and her husband again at some point - perhaps it'll be them. It would fit with the whole return to Camorr thing.
Although anything could change at this point. Goodness knows what'll happen in the seventh book, it's so very far away right now.
I remember Scott saying that
Sabetha — Wed, 06/16/2010 - 14:34I remember Scott saying that quite a lot acutally, about the Eldren! I thought he might be playing around with us though! But, I do agree with you. I 'm actually not too fond of the idea of involving the Eldren because I like mysteries (though a bit more information on them couldn't hurt) and because the reason I like Lies and RSURS is because there's not too much magical stuff in them - aside from the bondsmagi, which isn't exactly in-your-face either. Books that rely on the gods and magical powers are just to cliche for me nowadays.
Talking about magic... RoT is
TheSpider — Wed, 06/16/2010 - 17:33Talking about magic... RoT is going to be a key book for me. Usually I'm not a big fan of magic because I always think that things become too easy unless the rules of magic are very clear. I want to see how Scott deals with the Bondsmagi in RoT. It was already borderline when he told their story in LoLL. If they can destroy an entire army so easily, why don't they take over the world? Nothing seems to really be able to stop them. I understand that Locke will work from the inside to destroy them, but in the meantime it seems like a lot of efforts from the Bondsmagi. It would be so easy for them to kill Locke and Jean. I do understand that Lady ? (I forgot her name) may want revenge for her son's mutilation, but after the fiasco of RSuRS you would think that she would content herself with killing them. So I hope that the story in RoT is solid and that the rules and limits of magic are well explained, otherwise everything is going to seem pretty pointless to me. I'm hopeful because of this line:
The Republic of Thieves
Book III of the Gentleman Bastard Sequence
Forthcoming
The roots of love and a deep rivalry.
The nature of magic and the secrets of Karthain.
Thorn and Rose fight to share the stage.
Like Akaia, I've always thought that we would see Don and Dona Sofia again.
You're an evil person,
Elfy — Fri, 06/18/2010 - 08:44You're an evil person, Spider! I can't believe how much those few lines have me now guessing. The roots of love I assume refers to Locke and Sabetha, but it is highly likely that so does a deep rivalry, there's an interesting duality with Locke and Sabetha, they are in love (well Locke is with her, not sure if it's ever been reciprocated), but they are also rivals.
Maybe a Bondsmage will join forces with Locke and Co, maybe Sabetha has even become one!
Thorn probably refers to Locke as the Thorn of Camorr, but Rose? It suggests someone delicate and I've always got the impression that Sabetha is anything but.

TheSpider — Fri, 06/18/2010 - 16:32Thorn probably refers to Locke as the Thorn of Camorr, but Rose? It suggests someone delicate and I've always got the impression that Sabetha is anything but.
I've always assumed Rose is Sabetha, but I may be wrong...
In LoLL Chains describes her as "the born queen of all the charmers that ever lived." It's like a rose; it's beautiful and all but watch for the thorns!
I think that Sabetha is the
Sabetha — Fri, 06/18/2010 - 18:52I think that Sabetha is the rose! Rose to me implies beauty and - oh god this is so cliche - she DOES have red hair, which is obviously a rarity in Camorr. I like the idea of the comparison between her Locke, as in, she's the rose and he's the thorn. To me personally, rose doesn't imply delicacy, but something vibrant unlined with an element of hidden danger.
Spider, Scott said something really similar to what you just said! It's here: http://www.scottlynch.us/faq.html#15
But I guess that doesn't really answer your question, hehe. I'm sure it will be explained thoroughly - I just hope it's unique.
Check it out!

It was a nice surprise to find that in my inbox after returning from holiday! Big thanks to Scott - wasn't expecting an extended version at all! Honestly, it's such a lovely gesture on his behalf, personal problems considering and all.<3
My thoughts on the excerpt will be posted in the announcement section soon!
