Mr Lynch Confirmed Alive and Well!

ravelle — Mon, 01/26/2009 - 14:16

Just as we felt  perhaps the bondsmagi had imprisoned our favourtie author, SL has put out a blog post over at his live journal blog. Not much about the books unfortunatly, but an  interesting discourse into US politics. On a sadder note he adds
"...unfortunately going to be away for a while longer for personal reasons"
Alas it seems book three may be a little longer than we'd dare dream.

Our best wishes to Scott,

Rob & Sabetha

PS - Thanks to Icarus from our forums for nudging us with this!

I put this under general chat January 22. Perhaps the wrong category, as it seems to have slipped through the cracks. :?

I just got an email from Amazon letting me know that the February release date is no longer correct, and that they are canceling my order.

I have not gone back to see what they think the new release date is.

So July 16th, August 1st, August 26th and Feb. 24th.

There is no one set date. I keep on finding new dates. can we try and eliminate some of these?

lol, the good news is i can't find anymore feb dates so i think 24/2 is out. August first sounds like somebody saw an August release date, said August, and then somebody else interpreted that to be the first so I think that's out. Additionally, how many books are released on the first of the month? in auditing, they tell us the false numbers are generally round numbers (i.e. a $7000 purchase as opposed to a $4520 purchase) so i'm gonna say the late august date might be for a later printing (maybe for you foreigners in the UK) and the July date is for those of us privileged enough to be in the land of Uncle Sam. lol, until they push it back again.

From my understanding of the publishing industry, if the book is going to be published at anytime this year, it will be writen already. They are now doing the last polishing, cover design, etc... Maybe SL will grace us and let us know that it is done or something...

The last we heard of Sl's publisher (some months back), Lynch wasn't done with the manuscript. If these 'personal problems' are preventing him from writing, we have to assume the manuscript STILL isn't done. If it is, then hopefully they'll just be editing.

And (apparently) there's going to be A LOT of editing. Because RSURS didn't do so well, RoT needs to be Perfect (with a capital 'p') because if this one doesn't do well, it's fair to say the rest of the books wont do too well either. And there are alotta books to come.

That said, I reckon August is a sound date. 'Us foreigners', as someone put, have been getting the books earlier than Americans because Lynch was orignally contracted to an English publisher. Why it should change this time round is a mystery, but Gollancz has stated July as a release date (though the fact we still don't have cover art is a worry).

So basically, no one knows, and we have many many many more months of torture.

Oh wait, I got it. It is 'Summer 2009', but Lynch still hasn't finished the MS so they think it'll be autumn or next january.

That's right people, NEXT JANUARY.

*dies*

I also heard that us Brits will be gettin' it first because Bantam is haing financial difficulties (DAMN YOU CREDIT CRUNCH), while Gollancz isn't doing so bad. Basically means Bantam will probably wait til the beginning of the year again, while Gollancz might get it out faster. But who knows.

Where'd you get evidence??? Has anyone been in touch with the publisher again?

Next January...that'll be January 2010!? Please gods, no...

If we Brits do get the book earlier than the american market (and I mean quite a bit earlier, like a couple of weeks+) then I'll mail a copy to any american fan dying to get their hands on it as fast as possible. I would hate it if it was the other way round >_< although the amount of time we've waited already, what's a couple of weeks??? Gah...

Someone heard from Lynch's publicist.

I don't think you'll need to post it to them (though that's such a nice thing to do! :D ) because they could jusy buy it off amazon.co.uk, right? Aaaaah I just want it NOW. Lol.

If the book still isn't finished writing, then there is no way it will be out in January 2010. The editor still has to read it and give back notes. Which has to be fixed by SL. Then it has to be mailed back and more notes if he is unlucky. Then it goes to typeset and cover art is done up. Once the typeset is done, then a copy goes to SL for him to correct any and all errors in it. Meanwhile, SL will sign off on the covers once they are done. The book covers will then be shown to the distributors who'll put orders in for them. Then and only then will the book be printed and we can buy it.

So, what can we see. On the Canadian Amazon site, http://www.amazon.ca/Republic-Thieves-Scott-Lynch/dp/0553804693/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234321856&sr=8-1 The release date is Feb 24th, 2009. There is a cover, but no page count. The Site http://www.amazon.com/Republic-Thieves-Scott-Lynch/dp/0553804693 says that we can be notified when available. http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/l/scott-lynch/republic-of-thieves.htm says Feb 24th as well. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2890090.The_Republic_of_Thieves says Feb 24th. 800 pages. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4946718.The_Republic_of_Thieves same site as the one before, but says June 9th. 2008. 512 pages. And no cover. http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Republic-of-Thieves-The-Gentleman-Scott-Lynch/9780575077010-item.html?ref=Search+Books%3a+%2527republic+of+thieves%2527 says Aug 1, 2009. No cover. 488 Pages. Barnes and Noble has no listing. http://www.borders.com/online/store/TitleDetail?sku=0553804693 says August 24th, 2009. 800 pages.

So what can we conclude. Little unfortunately. Some sites have no cover. Some sites have a cover. Some sites have no page count, some have 800, some have 512 or 488. Some sites have Feb 24th, some say August 1st, some say Aug 24th. Based on what I know about the publishing industry from reading about a dozen how-to write novel books (unpublished author myself) the sites don't have a clue as well. They are trying to make some sales from posting anything that they can. If the page count was the same, I'd call the book written and in the later stages. But seeing as there are conflicts in the different sites, it is hard to tell.

As an unpublished author, I know how hard it is to write a novel. Let alone three. Plus having a wife to keep happy. Especially in this recession. Who knows what is happening in these trying times. Writing a book isn't profitable unless you are a celebrity or Tom Clancy. He might have had to take a second job to keep his family fed. Just my points. My vote is no later than July 31st, 2010.
