I read the first novel, and although it had good characters and nice world-building, I felt the pace was extremely slow. It picked up in the last third of the book, but for me, that's a little late in the game.
I've considered continuing with the next novel, but I haven't done it yet.
I read the first one a couple of months ago, and was somewhat... bothered by it. I haven't been able to lay my finger on exactly why I didn't like it as much as I'd expected, though it didn't help that the plot was built up until the very end, and then "to be continued"! I liked the characters though, so I'm going to read more during the summer. I think I'd enjoy "Best Served Cold" and "the Heroes" more - I take it there's no interrupted plots there - but we'll see. I have a feeling the trilogy might grow on me.
I have all Joe Abercrombie's books and I think they're great.
They have a very dark streak of humour running through them and there aren't normally any conventional heroes to root for, lots of anti-heroes instead. But that's probably what makes them so readable, well for me at least.
I highly recommend persevering with the Trilogy, and checking out the other two stand alone books.
I've tried reading it - have the first book of the series beside me right now. I don't know what it is, but I couldn't get into it either. Forgive me for those who are fans of it, but I find the writing quality a little simplistic. Maybe that's just because I've only read a little into the first book, where the style is perhaps not developed yet.
I don't know. I'll give it another shot this summer!

I enjoyed but it does start slowly.

Icarus — Wed, 08/13/2008 - 00:24I'm having a difficult time finding it in local bookstores.
As a result, I picked up Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn: The First Empire. I'm about 150 pages in and really enjoying it.
