Jim Butcher's Codex Alera

Icarus — Wed, 07/09/2008 - 01:15

I highly recommend this series from Jim Butcher (who also writes "The Dresden Files").

While it is yet another "The boy from a farm in the middle nowhere discovers that only he can save the world" fantasy novel, it is very well done, with great world-building, and excellent characters.

Book 1 - Furies of Calderon
Book 2 - Academ's Fury
Book 3 - Cursor's Fury
Book 4 - Captain's Fury

The 5th book, Princep's Fury, comes out this December.

I agree, While Butcher does use some of the same old formula he adds new elements as well. I do like how added ancient roman elements to the story.

I also enjoy his Dresden files tremendously, but i think I like his Alera series a little better. What is really cool about Butcher is that he seems like two different authors when he writes these books. Its a totally different style for Dresden than it is for Alera.

I also highly recommend this series!

I was actually really frustrated by the first book in Codex Alera. I totally got the concept and the writing was great (I adore the Dresden series), but I really, really, really, wanted Tavi to find powers of his own and I was really annoyed that it never happened and as near as I can tell never does. I totally understand why Mr. Butcher made that decision and I support it, but for some reason it really frustrated me.

Keep reading the series. That problem gets addressed and resolved.

Even on the Jim Butcher they admit that the first book is not great, but it lays a lot of groundwork. The series really picks up with the third book.

Jim Butcher lives five miles down the road from me (neighboring suburb of Kansas City on I-70). You would think we would be best buddies or something. :P

Very cool.

I'm really hoping that Jim Butcher, Scott Lynch, or Pat Rothfuss come to the Washington DC area for signings sometime soon.
