George C. Chesbro - RIP

Roland of Gilead — Wed, 11/19/2008 - 21:21

George C. Chesbro died. He was one of my favorites. His Mongo series was billed as Raymond Chandler meets Stephen King, and I found that to be an apt description. Mongo was a former circus dwarf and later a noted criminologist, with a black belt in the martial arts. The tales were narrated from a first-person POV, and Mongo was very witty and sardonic, but also bitter over his stunted stature. The mysteries were laced with supernatural and science fiction elements, and there wasn't a bad book in the bunch. The best of the lot was The Beasts of Valhalla.

Chesbro also wrote several stand-alones and another series featuring martial arts specialist and Vietnam vet Veil Kendry.

Chesbro was a very friendly and personable guy, and autographed several of my books through the mail. I only sent him the hardcovers, but he said he would sign all the paperbacks as well if I wanted to send them.

He will be missed.
