Characters from 'The Lies of Locke Lamora'

Here you will find profiles for some of the main characters featured in 'The Lies of Locke Lamora', excluding the Gentlemen Bastards, who can be found here.

VENCARLO BARSAVI

Vencarlo Barsavi is capa of the Right People and the undisputed ruler of Camorr’s underworld. Once a teacher of rhetoric, Barsavi fled Tal Verrar after being caught running an illegal betting shop and made for Camorr, where he murdered the thirty capa haphazardly ruling the city’s innumerable gangs and declared himself as prime ruler. He then created the Secret Peace in exchange for governing parts of Camorr, such as the Dregs and the Snare, and promptly became the most powerful individual in the city, second to the Duke. He is ruthless and astute with an unpredictable temper, but extremely sentimental towards his family, especially Nazca.

NAZCA BARSAVI

The youngest child and only daughter of Capa Barsavi, Nazca is described as having ‘the manners of a pirate princess’ and boasts a strong, intelligent, fiery personality despite being confined to her home and headquarters, the Floating Grave. She shares a close but platonic relationship with Locke, who was her first pezon.

LUKAS FEHRWIGHT

A fictional character created by Locke for the purpose of conning Don Salvara out of his money. He is both nervous and gracious, underlined by flustered mannerisms that make him appear ‘prissy’. The Vadran was sent by his masters at the House of Bel Auster to prevent the Austershalin brandy business from falling into ruin beneath the weight of the impending civil war that threatens the Kingdom of Seven Marrows. He is sent to Camorr to offer Don Jacobo a percentage of the Austershalin shares if he agrees to finance and aid the smuggling, storage and marketing of the remaining priceless brandy during the relapse.

THE SPIDER OF CAMORR

A mysterious character who governs the Duke’s secret police, the Midnighters. The identity of the Spider has remained entirely undisclosed for years, to the point where many believe the Spider is fictional. However, it is known that this individual evokes fear from even Barsavi, and is a force to be reckoned with.

THE FALCONER

Perhaps the most formidable adversary in LoLL. The Falconer is a bondsmage from Karthain with otherworldly magical power, able to inflict extraordinary pain with just a few words and gestures. He is an arrogant, forbidding individual who takes obvious pleasure in the torture of others and works for the Grey King. He also has a bird companion, Vestral, whose violent nature and venom-filled claws augment the Falconer’s formidable presence.

THE GREY KING

He is the main adversary; the brains behind the dangerous plots Locke finds himself tangled in. Fuelled my motives he is initially unwilling to reveal, the Grey King is ruthless but aristocratic in his mannerisms. He dresses entirely in grey, earning his namesake.

THE THIEFMAKER

The unlikely ruler of Shades’ Hill and the orphans that dwell within. He makes a trade from buying children whose parents are victims of plague epidemics and fires, taking them to the Hill and teaching them the art of thievery. He came to the Hill many years before and was initially under the mercy of the resident children, but as time went on and he grudgingly taught them the tricks of his trade, so his authority grew and he created his underworld lair dedicated to producing thieves he would later sell on to Camorr’s gangs. He is wily and brusque, with crooked fingers where they had once been broken and healed unevenly. He is callous, but charismatic and likeable nonetheless.
